The International Criminal Court (ICC) has strongly condemned the U.S. State Department’s recent imposition of sanctions on its president, Judge Tomoko Akane, and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye. The sanctions were enacted under an executive order issued in February 2025 by President Donald Trump.

These measures specifically target ICC officials who are involved in investigations concerning U.S. or allied nationals from nations that are not signatories to the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC. The U.S. government’s position is that the ICC is overreaching its mandate by seeking to investigate nationals of states not party to the Rome Statute. The administration views the ICC’s actions as potentially undermining national sovereignty and the established international legal framework.
