The report comes as GED participation remains strong. According to GED Testing Service, more than 1 million GED subject tests were taken in 2025, and 154,839 individuals earned their GED diplomas during the year. GED participation outside the United States also grew by 25% in 2025.
More than 21 million people have earned a GED credential since the program began.
Understanding GED Pass Rates
One goal of Onsego’s new statistics resource is to make GED data easier to understand.
GED statistics can measure different stages of the testing process. A student may take one GED subject, complete all four subjects, pass an individual subject or earn the complete credential. As a result, reported GED pass rates can vary depending on which group of students is being measured.
For example, national data for 2023 shows that 302,527 people took at least one GED subject test. Of those, 181,749 completed all four subjects and 136,640 earned a GED credential.
Among students who completed all four subjects, approximately 75.2% earned the credential. Measured against everyone who took at least one GED subject during the year, approximately 45.2% earned the credential.

GED Success Goes Beyond Passing the Test
The report also looks beyond test scores.

The statistics also highlight some of the challenges adult learners face before reaching the testing stage. GED Testing Service reports that 30% of prospective learners delay or avoid testing because of fear of failure, while nearly half report that mental health challenges have disrupted their learning.
