We Care Solar Launches $40 Million Campaign with Global Citizen to Expand Solar-Powered Maternal Health Care

NEW YORK, Sept. 29, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — We Care Solar today announced a $40 million multi-year campaign with Global Citizen, the world’s largest movement to end extreme poverty, to fund 10,000 Solar Suitcases for maternal health facilities where reliable electricity remains out of reach, with AtlasDaughters announcing a $500,000 founding commitment to the campaign, part of 2.8 million dollars raised towards the $40 million goal.
The campaign was announced last Wednesday at Global Citizen NOW: Impact Sessions, where We Care Solar joined Global Citizen as a partner NGO. Global Citizen mobilizes people worldwide to take action to end extreme poverty, turning collective action into commitments from governments, companies and philanthropists. More than $50 billion in commitments announced on its platforms has been deployed over 14 years, impacting 1.3 billion lives.
We Care Solar’s Solar Suitcase is a compact solar-electric system designed for last-mile health facilities. It provides medical lighting and power for fetal monitoring, emergency communication and other essential devices, helping health workers deliver maternal and newborn care when grid electricity is unavailable or unreliable. We Care Solar pairs the technology with gender-inclusive technical training to build local capacity so that systems can be maintained in the communities they serve.
AtlasDaughters’ founding commitment grows out of a longstanding relationship with We Care Solar and comes ahead of an AtlasDaughters learning journey to Zimbabwe in March 2027. During the journey, mothers, grandmothers and their children will visit rural clinics, learn directly from We Care Solar’s team and local health workers, and take part in a collaborative giving program supporting solar-powered maternal health care.

The commitment reflects AtlasDaughters’ model of participatory philanthropy, which brings families closer to the organizations and communities they support before asking them to make collective funding decisions. AtlasDaughters complements the frontline NGO experiences with a philanthropy curriculum that introduces children to the concept of global citizenship and responsibility. The upcoming Zimbabwe cohort is expected to contribute to the $500,000 commitment through AtlasDaughters’ collaborative giving program.
